Another Detroit Airport Scare

By Jillian Farrel -- February 8, 2010

A terminal at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport was evacuated Monday after a man refused to comply with security measures at a screening checkpoint.

The Transportation Security Administration arrested the man in the McNamara Terminal early in the morning and immediately questioned him, according to the airport spokesman Mike Conway.

For preventative measures, security doors were lowered between that portion of the terminal and the terminal concourse. Individuals in that area were evacuated. One hour after this event, the TSA resumed passenger screening.

The man's vehicle was searched and towed, while dogs searched the airport terminal. Conway says nothing was found.

This scare incites more cause to worry about the safety of airports and planes, especially in the Detroit area. This security breech came only a few months after the Christmas Day bomber tried to ignite a bomb on a Northwest flight from Detroit to Amsterdam. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is the man accused of the bomb plot.

On December 21st, a tape was released from the leader of Al Qaeda in Yemen, which said, "we are carrying a bomb to hit the enemies of God." The accused bomber told the FBI he was trained in Yemen for over a month, given 80 grams of high explosives, which was sewn into his underwear.

However, the ethnicity, religious background, or political affiliation of the man from Monday's airport scare is unknown.
