Haiti is a Caribbean nation located just southwest of the United States. It's one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, and on January 12th of this year, Haiti was hit by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that destroyed the capital of Port-au-Prince, killing over 200,000 Haitians and leaving massive damage behind.
World Vision is a national organization that works with families and communities worldwide who struggle with poverty and injustice. Many of World Vision's Boston-based volunteers were deployed to Haiti within hours of the earthquake, including Laura Blank. Blank is a Disaster Communications specialist for World Vision. I had the opportunity to speak with Laura about her experience helping with relief efforts, just weeks after the quake.
