A massive snowstorm is expected to hit Massachusetts today, which will close schools, clog the evening commute, and cause snow emergencies in communities.
6-9 inches are expected to fall over the Boston area, but the heaviest snowfall is expected to hit Southeastern Massachusetts, where some areas will get over a foot, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Simpson.
Some school districts began announcing closures in areas, such as Boston, Revere, Fall River, Everett, Somerville, and Middleborough. Many cities have declared snow emergencies, including Boston, New Bedford, and Brockton.
The storm will develop from low pressure moving up the North Carolina coast, which will start this morning and end late in the evening.
The bulk of the storm will hit between 2 and 6 pm.
"We recommend anyone who can utilize public transportation to do so," said Peter Judge of Massachusetts Emergency Management Team.
The runways will be effected, as well. According to a Logan Airport spokesman, Phil Orlandella, airport officials will be meeting early Wednesday morning to discuss options and glitches in flight plans.
Simpson said the snow should taper off this evening, and calmer weather is on the forecast tomorrow.
