Latest Rasmussen Poll: Massachusetts Gubernatorial Race

By Saniya Ghanoui -- July 27, 2010

The results from the latest Rasmussen survey show Gov. Deval Patrick maintaining his lead over Republican Charlie Baker. Patrick has 38% of the vote while Baker has 32%. Current state treasurer, Tim Cahill, who is running as an Independent, is third with 17% support.

Accusing Patrick of "giving up control of our children's education," Baker criticized the governor's administration on Monday for supporting the adoption of Common Core, the national guidelines for education.

Baker said the switch to Common Core would bring about unnecessary changes to the way the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) are used.

"For all that needs to be done to fix Massachusetts, education is what works, and we should keep it that way," said Baker at a press conference.

Cahill also criticized the decision to go with the national standards. "We are abandoning more than 15 years of progress made here in the Commonwealth," said Cahill in a statement.

Alex Goldstein, Patrick's campaign spokesman, said the governor is not wavering on his commitment to the high education standards in the state.

"Governor Patrick has been crystal clear that Massachusetts will not agree to the national standards unless they are as high or higher than our current standards," said Goldstein.

In addition to education, the state has been dealing with a tough economy and immigration issues and the governor's opponents have criticized the way Patrick has dealt with the issues.

During his time in office, former Republican Gov. Mitt Romney had assigned 30 state troopers with the task of imposing federal immigration laws. Patrick stopped that assignment when he took office, yet both Baker and Cahill say they will bring it back if elected.

Another candidate, Jill Stein, is a Lexington physician and running as a Green-Rainbow Party member. She previously ran for governor in 2002.
