The results from the latest Rasmussen survey
show Gov. Deval Patrick maintaining his lead over Republican Charlie Baker.
Patrick has 38% of the vote while Baker has 32%. Current state treasurer, Tim
Cahill, who is running as an Independent, is third with 17% support.
Accusing Patrick of "giving up control of our children's education," Baker criticized the governor's administration on Monday for supporting the adoption of Common Core, the national guidelines for education.
Baker said the switch to Common Core would bring
about unnecessary changes to the way the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment
System (MCAS) are used.
"For all that needs to be done to fix
Cahill also criticized the decision to go with
the national standards. "We are abandoning more than 15 years of progress made
here in the Commonwealth," said Cahill in a statement.
Alex Goldstein, Patrick's campaign spokesman,
said the governor is not wavering on his commitment to the high education
standards in the state.

In addition to education, the state has been
dealing with a tough economy and immigration issues and the governor's opponents
have criticized the way Patrick has dealt with the issues.
During his time in office, former Republican
Gov. Mitt Romney had assigned 30 state troopers with the task of imposing
federal immigration laws. Patrick stopped that assignment when he took office,
yet both Baker and Cahill say they will bring it back if elected.
